Suits that are helping new mothers survive blood loss. bixbycenter.ucsf.edu California-based Zoex Corporation was the first company to develop commercially available pressure garments suitable for treating shock and blood loss in new mothers. Since the pressure does not need to be as strong as in military and aviation cases, the company scrapped the old-style G-suits for a non-pneumatic version using simple elastic compression. In a recent study by NASA Ames Research Centre and other researchers, the garments saved 13 out of 14 patients in Pakistan who were in shock from extreme blood loss. In another study in Egypt and Nigeria, the garment reduced both blood loss and mortality from postpartum haemorrhage by 50 percent. "In the field of maternal health, we generally do

This Artist Cookbook Has a Recipe for "Rain After Cloud"

The ache is equal parts contortion and confusion—like exiting a college lecture with the dizzying sensation that your neurons are actively stretching, or viewing an art exhibit that’s just barely outside of your grasp: You have the potential to understand it but you don’t—not fully, not yet. Olafur Eliasson is a Danish-Icelandic artist best known for his large-scale installations involving the natural elements: In 1998, he colored a Berlin river green ; in 2003, he rose a sun inside Turbine Hall at the Tate Modern ; in 2008, he created four manmade waterfalls in New York City; in 2014, he recreated a riverbed at the Danish Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. As Gabe Ulla puts it, his works "make you take note of your place in the physical world." As does cooking. As does eating. Is there a reminder as poignant of our physicality as our place in an ecosystem? Or as hunger? With that in mind, it's not counterintuitive that a world-re

Dual Pixel Autofocus Makes It To A Smartphone! Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge Have Canon’s Dual Pixel AF

Image
Time remaining to enter: A first for a phone – Dual Pixel AF! The just announced Samsung Galaxy S7 has DPAF and great low light capabilities Now there’s some discussion bout whether this is really Canon’s technology and Samsung doesn’t really just say that it is Canon’s but they do say in the video “uses the technology used in professional cameras” – which to me sure implies that it is Canon’s DPAF. So… it is interesting discussion about who’s making this sensor… is it Canon or is Samsung just licensing the tech and putting it in their sensor, or did they ‘borrow’ the concept and call it the same thing? Based on the legal battles they’ve had with Apple over the iPhone , I can’t imagine they’d just use the same name without some agreement with Canon that exchanges money as well. Notice too the low light differences in both videos. Impressive! Tho I do note that I’ve seen reports that it shoots 4k, there’s not been any mention of whether the DPAF is available in movi

Ta-Nehisi Coates

Image
It’s always exciting when a writer from another media platform comes in to take a ride with superheroes. Joss Whedon made waves with his Astonishing X-Men run in 2004, and TV screenwriter Allan Heinberg’s Young Avengers kickstarted the most energetic teenage heroes in the entire Marvel universe. Marvel’s latest crossover may be the most interesting of all, however. Ta-Nehisi Coates, known for both hard-hitting journalism in The Atlantic and poetic memoirs like the bestselling Between the World and Me , is now writing Black Panther, Marvel’s first and foremost black superhero. Excitement has been building for months. Now the comic’s here, and it’s great. So let’s walk through it. First, a quick catch-up for those not already familiar with the Black Panther character: Originally introduced in the pages of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s Fantastic Four , Black Panther (real name T’Challa) was mainstream comics’ first black superhero. From the beginning, he shattered stereotypes.
