Oscars 2016: Kesha thanks Lady Gaga, Joe Biden

Image
Kesha praised Lady Gaga and Vice President Joe Biden following the singer’s emotional performance of “Til It Happens to You” at the Oscars on Sunday night. “Thank u @ladygaga and VP @JoeBiden for bringing attention to sexual assault at the Oscars,” Kesha tweeted. (Biden introduced Gaga’s performance and encouraged viewers to pledge against sexual assault at ItsOnUs.org .) “It hits very close to my heart for obvious reasons,” Kesha added. Kesha’s currently in the midst of a legal battle against producer Dr. Luke, who she’s accused of sexual assault. Dr. Luke has denied Kesha’s claims. “I didn’t rape Kesha and I have never had sex with her,” he posted last week via Twitter. “It’s sad that she would turn a contract negotiation into something so horrendous and untrue. But I feel confident when this is over the lies will be exposed and the truth will prevail…” thank u @ladygaga and VP @JoeBiden for bringing attention to sexual assault at the oscars. it hit very close to my he

8 Things You Need to Know About the Samsung Galaxy J5

Image
8 Things You Need to Know About the Samsung Galaxy J5 Samsung silently introduced the Galaxy J5 and J7 smartphones via a listing on its website in China. Over a period of 3 weeks after that, the two devices, the latest in the budget Galaxy J series, have since made it to several emerging markets where they were targeted. Kenya happens to be one of those markets. I have had with me the lower priced device of the two, the Galaxy J5, for the last one week. Here are a few things I believe you may want to know about it before I finally review it. 1. 4G/LTE The Samsung Galaxy J5 builds on the legacy of the Galaxy J1, one of the best-selling low-end smartphones in the Kenyan market. The Galaxy J1 came in two variations: one had 4G/LTE and cost a few thousand shillings more than the other 3G variant. Since the J1 was affordable to begin with, the LTE option was okay with most buyers. The J5 brings that same 4G/LTE support but with better specifications all round that, as you’ll see la

Does Talcum Powder Cause Cancer?

Image
The recent verdict against Johnson & Johnson, requiring the company pay $72 million in damages to the family of a woman whose death the plaintiffs claimed is linked to her use of the company’s Baby Powder and Shower to Shower, brings to light startling questions about the safety of one of America’s most ubiquitous personal care products, talcum powder. With our own medicine cabinets well stocked, we’re left wondering: How dangerous is the talcum powder in our products? And what do we need to do to be safe? The world’s softest mineral, talc is used in a host of cosmetics, like eyeshadow and blush, as well as body dusting powders. In its natural form, some talc contains asbestos, a known carcinogen, but according to the American Cancer Society, commercial talcum powders used in homes have been manufactured and tested to be asbestos-free since the 1970s. Still, studies conducted to assess their safety in consumer products have yielded contradictory findings . Questi

Flight Attendant Bride Got Married In Flight

Image
The Touching Reason this Flight-Attendant Bride Got Married In Flight Kristy Stratton married Jim Larsen in a beautiful white gown with accessories of her own design. Her pastor led the ceremony, her mom had a front row seat, and her friend took photographs. It was a pretty typical wedding, save for one small thing— the wedding was held 35,000 feet in the air. Stratton worked as a flight attendant for Alaska Airlines for 11 years. She met Larsen on a layover from Los Angeles to Seattle. Six years later, when they were planning to tie the knot, Stratton had a brilliant idea. "I was thinking of unique wedding ideas while driving home from a red-eye about a month before the wedding and thought it'd be a cool idea to get married on that exact flight," she told Today.com . The idea was especially appealing to Stratton, because her mother, Billie Joe Stratton, had been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. Her mother wanted to see her daughter get married, but al

Black Hole

Image
If Earth Were Swallowed By A Black Hole, We Might Not Even Notice Black holes get a bad rap. Sure, they're the dark, unknown, unforgiving vacuum cleaners of space. But a new study suggests they may not be all doom and gloom after all. There are several theories as to what would happen if you fell into a black hole: that you would get stretched into spaghetti, or that a wall of fire would incinerate you. New calculations from Ohio State physicist Samir Mathur suggest nothing so morbid. In fact, if a black hole ate the world right now, he says, we might not even notice . Mathur posits that material that touches a black hole, instead of being destroyed, might turn into a near-perfect hologram. And if that's not trippy enough, consider the fact that we may be living in a hologram right now . The paper hasn't yet been peer-reviewed, as far as we can tell, and it will surely be controversial--although not for reasons a normal person might expect. An id

Roasted Tomato and Turkey Club Sandwich

Image
Recipe: Roasted Tomato and Turkey Club Sandwich   Club sandwiches are usually best in the summer when tomatoes are at their peak, but what do you when the craving hits in cold-weather season and the only tomatoes available are rock-hard and sad? Just pop those tomatoes into a hot oven and you'll have juicy oven-roasted tomatoes in just 30 minutes. Stack them into a club sandwich that you can enjoy — even with a few feet of snow outside. When you scoop out the seeds of plum tomatoes, flavor them with some oil and garlic, and then roast them, the tomatoes get succulent, juicy, and meltingly tender. These tomatoes add a bright and savory note to sandwiches or salads. A club sandwich is all about the right proportions: the right thickness of bread, not too much meat, crisp lettuce, and crispier bacon. You want just enough of each one where you can taste it, but not too much where the sandwich becomes large and hard to eat. So stick with the thin sandwich bread here, since you

Downton Abbey Edwardian Inspiration

Image
Downton Abbey: Edwardian Inspiration With their milky complexions and enviably natural beauty, the sisters of Downton Abbey are TV’s most elegant new sensations. From the minute the credits rolled over images of the manicured lawns and imposing facades of Highclere Castle, the maids in white caps and butlers polishing silver, I was addicted to Downton Abbey. The English costume drama, a compelling upstairs-downstairs soap opera with a Mad Men–like flair for period fashion and etiquette, follows the fortunes of a wildly dysfunctional aristocratic English family at the beginning of the twentieth century. Its first season, which aired on Masterpiece on PBS last year, won six Emmys. Its second season, which comes to U.S. television screens this Sunday, shattered ratings records when it premiered in the U.K. this past fall, rivaling the Murdoch scandal in terms of newspaper-column inches. So it is little surprise that the three beautiful Crawley daughters, whose romantic entanglements are

Useful Things

Useful Things to Know About Fresh Ginger Whether used in tea and marinades or to stir-fries and desserts, ginger plays the role of spice and warmth in a huge variety of dishes. This knobby root brings a bright and fiery kick with pungent flavor that carries just a hint of sweetness. Here are a few things you should know to make the most of this kitchen standby. 1. Use your senses to pick the knob of ginger. Knowing what to look for is the key to getting maximum flavor from fresh ginger. Go for ginger with thin, shiny, taut skin, with a pungent and spicy aroma (yes, it's okay to smell before you buy!). 2. A plastic bag and the crisper drawer will keep ginger fresh longer. There are a few different ways to store whole unpeeled fresh ginger. But when you use it regularly, keeping it in a resealable plastic bag inside the crisper drawer of the fridge is your best bet for longer-lasting freshness. 3. Grate and store fresh ginger in the freezer so it's alwa

The Role Of The Man In The Family

Image
The Role Of The Man In The Family If a man makes a good living at work and is a loving father but can’t say “I love you” to his wife, then is he still fulfilling his role? If he’s an excellent provider materially — but not spiritually or emotionally — how is he measuring up? What exactly should be his role anyway? The role of a man may be evolving, but one thing has not changed, according to Dr. Phil: It’s a privilege that comes with a lot of responsibility. Here are four roles he thinks men should embrace: A Provider Most men believe that being a good provider means supporting a family financially. It means much more than that. A man should also contribute to the emotional, spiritual, physical and mental well-being of his family. In order to do this, he must recognize that there are other currencies, in addition to money, that need to be provided. A Protector This means more than beating up the guy next door if he insults your wife. It means protecting her self-esteem a

Relationship With a Blamer

Image
There is no better time for growing than the holiday season. And not just growing in the belly, but in the heart and mind as well. Family interactions, particularly those that go on over a period of consecutive days, offer profound opportunities for self-awareness, learning, and evolution. Our greatest challenges are our greatest teachers, and they often manifest in the form of family—at least, that’s been my experience. I have taken on a practice and habit of bowing to my hardest or most painful situations, even as I struggle with and loathe them. I know that if I can approach my greatest challenges with awareness and self-kindness, I can use them to evolve and find more peace in my life. I know from practice that the hard parts of life will change me, and for this opportunity to change, if not the situation itself, I am grateful . How do you respond and, if you so choose, continue to be in relationship with a person who uses you as a place to assign the feelings that they cannot ow

Fashion Trend Normcore

Fashion Trend - Birkenstock   “I am excited and amused to see them become so fashionable!” Susannah, a New York University senior, had a similar reaction. “I grew up a mega hippie in the mountains of Los Angeles. I’m pretty sure Birkenstocks are the elected shoe of Topanga Canyon, and Chinese slippers have forever occupied my closet,” adds the 21-year-old fine arts major. To keep it stylishly on point, Savannah stresses the importance of balance: “Duck boots are classic, and I like seeing them paired with more trendy pieces. Shower slides add a bit of boyishness to a sweet dress.” Chill-out kicks seamlessly work into Susannah’s personal wardrobe as well. “I like unisex items such as old army and navy uniforms,” says the emerging face, who claims she’d “never dreamed of being a model” before she was discovered by Saint Laurent designer Hedi Slimane. Since then, she has become the master of juggling both art courses and modeling, even if it has affected her sartorial choices. “One sec

How To Make Popcorn in the Microwave

Image
Microwave popcorn has changed my snacking habits forever. No, I'm not talking about the plastic-wrapped packages of microwave popcorn from the store — although I will thank them for the inspiration. I'm talking about a more DIY version using a scoop of kernels and a plain brown paper lunch bag. It's so easy and fast that it has now become the only way I make popcorn. A Paper Bag Is All You Need Any paper bag will do, but I like to use brown paper lunch bags. These are just the right size to hold one serving of popcorn (about 1/4 cup of kernels). If you want to make enough popcorn for a few people to share, you can pop more kernels at once using a large paper grocery bag. Check over your bag before using it and make sure that it doesn't have any staples or other metal bits. Also examine the bag for holes or tears, especially along the seams — kernels will jump out when they start popping! You can usually reuse a paper bag several times before i

Sweet Potato Soup with Miso and Ginger

Image
Creamy sweet potatoes, spicy ginger, and sweet and salty miso all meet in this easy, delicious soup that my family has been enjoying the last few days. When I first served it, my husband had a hard time pinning down the flavors — we both thought it tasted fruity, although I knew there was no apple or orange in the recipe. It's thick, creamy, bright, and an excellent use for leftover sweet potatoes. A yogurt drizzle adds a tangy touch and more warming spice. This soup makes an easy weeknight meal all on its own, especially if you already have a few leftover roasted sweet potatoes in the fridge. For a more complete meal, add a side salad or bulk it up with some chickpeas. Sweet Potato Soup with Miso and Ginger For the soup: Olive oil 1 large yellow onion, chopped 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 (2-inch) piece fresh ginger, peeled and thinly sliced, about 1/4 cup 3 cups mashed sweet potato (from about 3 roasted sweet potatoes) 3 tablespoons light miso 4 cups chicken or ve

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Tips

Image
1. Set the device to light up the Edge screen when calls or messages are received One of the main features of the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge’s Edge display is to have it illuminate a certain color based on who’s calling or messaging you. You’ll probably want to get this setup as soon as you receive your phone. Simply head to Settings > Edge screen > Edge lighting and make sure the option is set to “On,” and you’re good to go! 2. Pick 5 of your most important people to light up your Edge display Of course, setting up the Edge display isn’t worth much without actually specifying which contacts you want lighting up your desk. Going to Settings > Edge screen > People edge will allow you to do just that. Alternatively, on the home-screen you can slide out the People edge user interface by swiping the transparent tab to the middle of the display, and use the “+” icon to add any contact you want. Now you can set up to 5 contacts that will illuminate your E

Valentine’s Day Ideas for Couples

Image
25 Valentine’s Day Ideas for Couples   Here are some creative ways to tell your spouse, “I love you.” Is it more important to love … or to be loved? Most of us would agree with George Eliot’s words, “I like not only to be loved, but also to be told I am loved.” Valentine’s Day is the occasion when you can experience both. We asked Family Life Facebook friends and e-mail readers to share some of their favourite Valentine’s Day ideas. With a little help from our friends, here are 25 creative ways to tell your spouse, “I love you.” 1. On small pieces of paper, write down every kind of kiss that you can think of (examples: passionate, on the cheek, etc.). Then fill an inexpensive red felt bag with your “kisses” and give it to your spouse. Ask your spouse to pull several pieces of paper from the felt bag, and then give your sweetheart whatever kind of kiss is described. 2. Make a book about why you love your spouse and why you are thankful for him/her. The woman who
