The Worst Health Habits - How to Fix Your Worst Health Habits

Image
What's the big deal? If you're lucky, sleeping in a face full of makeup will only leave behind a pimple or two. But make it an all-the-time thing and you're asking for clogged pores and a breeding ground for bacteria to run wild on. The worst culprit? Foundation, according to Elissa Lunder, MD, FITNESS advisory board member and owner of Dermatology Partners, Inc. in Massachusetts. In some cases, Dr. Lunder has even seen people develop milia — small, hard bumps that form on the skin. And while she says sleeping in eye makeup won't cause your lashes to fall out or give you pinkeye (whew!), dozing in mascara can cause eye swelling. But don't stop the suds at your face! Forgetting to wash your brushes can lead to staph infections as well as aid in spreading cold sores or other illnesses. Um...gross? Break it: If you had a late night and find yourself waking up to raccoon eyes, wash your face with a normal cleanser and a washcloth. Steer clear of faci

How Nuclear Power Can Stop Global Warming

Image
When the Atlantic Navigator docked in Baltimore harbor earlier this month, the freighter carried the last remnants of some of the nuclear weapons that the Soviet Union had brandished in the cold war. During the past 20 years more than 19,000 Russian warheads have been dismantled and processed to make fuel for U.S. nuclear reactors . In fact, during that period more than half the uranium fuel that powered the more than 100 reactors in the U.S. came from such reprocessed nuclear weapons. In addition to reducing the risk of nuclear war, U.S. reactors have also been staving off another global challenge: climate change. The low-carbon electricity produced by such reactors provides 20 percent of the nation's power and, by the estimates of climate scientist James Hansen of Columbia University, avoided 64 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas pollution. They also avoided spewing soot and other air pollution like coal-fired power plants do and thus have saved some 1.8 m

15 Minute Workout: Fresh Flat Belly Moves

Image
15-Minute Workout: Fresh Flat Belly Moves Chances are, you've already elevated your ab work onto a stability ball . Smart move: Research shows that crunches atop a ball are approximately twice as effective as those done on the floor. But stop there and you're selling this multitasking tool short. "Most people think a stability ball is just for strengthening their core, but training with a ball can tone muscles throughout the entire body," says personal trainer and fitness author Larysa DiDio. "It also improves flexibility, balance, posture, and coordination." Plus, by swapping your old go-to moves for the following innovative workout, you'll wake up your body and shock it into burning more calories. You'll also increase cardio and muscular endurance (how long your heart and muscles can push before calling it quits). Three times a week, complete this workout, created by DiDio, as a fast-paced circuit, moving f

Easter candy is the worst

Image
Easter as a holiday has enormously old and potent roots. It is the amalgamation of pagan fertility rites, the welcoming of spring and the foundation of the Christian religion.  It also has the absolute worst  candy of any holiday. I'm not a connoisseur. I don't exclusively eat artisan dark chocolate made with more than 70% of cacao from specific regional sources. I like regular candy like a regular person. But waking up on Easter morning and heading downstairs to see what some odd anthropomorphic rabbit, an egg-delivering mammal, has stuffed on top of the plastic "grass" in a disposable basket only reveals the saddest excuse for sugary treats. Chocolate bunnies Chocolate rabbits remain at the forefront of Easter's war on decency. Few will disagree that they are largely made from the worst quality chocolate imaginable. They are made from the scraps swept off the floor of lower-tiered candy bar chocolate factories, formed into a hollow sha

The Drop a Jeans Size Workout

"Your muscles are made up of thousands of fibers," says trainer Brad Schoenfeld, author of the soon-to-be-released Women's Home Workout Bible , who developed the program exclusively for FITNESS. "A regular squat might call into play 70 percent of the fibers in your derriere, then a side lunge might tone 10 percent more. Do the 10 moves in this sculpting routine and you'll work 100 percent of those fibers." Part 1: Toning Do two sets of these toning exercises twice a week — take a day off in between workouts. What You'll Need: A set of 3- to 8-pound dumbbells and a stability ball (or a bench) Part 2: Cardio Do our simple, trimming cardio sessions (found in the last few slides of this workout) three times a week to downsize your denim in 28 days. Needless to say, it’s exper

Suffer From Snoring? This New Doctor Trusted Solution Stops Snoring and Lets You Sleep

Image
If you constantly feel exhausted, experience headaches for no obvious reason or have high blood pressure, it could be the result of snoring. More than a simple annoyance, snoring is also the most common symptom of a potentially serious health problem—obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Over 18 million Americans snore, and it’s related to OSA. People who suffer from OSA repeatedly and unknowingly stop breathing during the night due to a complete or partial obstruction of their airway.  It occurs when the jaw, throat, and tongue muscles relax, blocking the airway used to breathe.  The resulting lack of oxygen can last for a minute or longer, and occur hundreds of times each night. OSA has been linked to: Acid reflux Frequent nighttime urination Memory loss Stroke Depression Diabetes Heart attack People over 35 are at higher risk. OSA can be expensive to diagnosis and treat — up to $5,000 — and those treatments can sometimes be quite painful. Plus, they're not

The Best Ab Workouts for Crop Tops

Photographed by Craig McDean, Vogue, April 2013 Alexander Wang ’s cutaway white shirting, Balenciaga ’s abbreviated tees, Kenzo ’s scalloped navel-grazers: Flashes of midriff were ubiquitous at the spring 2014 collections, intended for the beach, the boardroom, and beyond. In preparation for a bold sartorial move, we speed-dialed trainers Key Son (whose clients include Daria Werbowy and Marisa Tomei ) and Justin Gelband (the man responsible for getting Victoria’s Secret Angels Miranda Kerr and Candice Swanepoel runway-ready) to discuss the secrets to a flat, toned stomach. Before dispensing any advice, Gelband is quick to preface that “there’s no quick fix” to a perfect body. In place of extreme dieting and frantic last-ditch sit-ups, he believes that being crop-top ready is “a way of life.” In fact, according to Son, if you really want to nail a midriff-baring look, the best plan is to “stay within striking distance of your best shape year round,” then kick it

How to Recover Deleted Files

Image
How to Recover Deleted Files We've all accidentally sent a file to the Recycle Bin (or Trash on the Mac). Thankfully, operating systems have known for years that when you drag a file to a garbage can icon, it should not instantly delete that file. You can generally open that trash icon, find your file, and restore it to its proper place on your hard drive. The problem comes after you've emptied that recycle bin. Then you're in trouble. But all is not lost. The first thing you should do is check your backups or sync services. That's the best way to get a file back, fully intact. On Dropbox , for instance, there are multiple versions of each file—you can even get back a version of a file from days before you lost it.  Go into the Web interface at Dropbox.com, click the trash icon at the top with the tooltip that says "Show Deleted Files." They'll appear as part of the list of files you know and love. Right click it to restore the file, or

Best Beaches in Brazil

Image
Best Beaches in Brazil If there is one destination known for its beaches, it’s Brazil. Rio de Janeiro alone has dozens, each as loud and lively as the next. From Carnival to the World Cup, the city is no stranger to showing travelers a good time, and this year is better than any to book a trip. The 2016 Summer Olympics kicks off in August and more than 380,000 spectators are expected to travel to the city for the games. That means tons of exciting activities and parties—many of which will take place on the beaches. Now, if you’re reading this and thinking that loud music and boisterous crowds are the last things you want to encounter while on your beach vacation, don’t worry. Brazil’s shoreline is filled with secluded hideaways, some of which even require hiking through the forest to find. Once you venture out of the country’s major metropolitan areas, Brazil’s rugged terrain sets the perfect backdrop to the strikingly blue water. You’ll want to grab your snorkel

Shoulder Pain

Image
Say Bye Bye To Shoulder Pain …! All day doing work at our office, or doing meals in kitchen, or playing with our friends we get tired in the end. And that way we use our shoulder a lot throughout a day that may result in acute  pain in shoulder . Our shoulder is comprised of a complicated and intricate network of muscles and ligaments, with the rotator cuff that bears much of the movement, exertion, and physical force. Pain in one part of body leads pain in other parts. In case of shoulder pain, neck and spine may also become inflamed that not only damages our workplace performance, sports play, and housekeeping, but also hinders daily activities and takes away peace of life. In the following paragraphs there are two types of shoulder pain cases and the preventive measures: In normal cases Pain in shoulder  usually results because of its overuse, excessive strain, improper movement, and sometimes falls. In these cases pain usually gets relieved by rest and painkiller medicati

Microsoft wants PS4 and Xbox One to connect online

Image
Microsoft will natively support cross-platform play between Xbox One, Windows 10 and other "online multiplayer networks." The move effectively opens the Xbox Live platform so that it can accommodate players on Sony's PlayStation Network, among others. The announcement was made on Xbox.com by Chris Charla, director of ID@Xbox, who said "it's up to game developers to support this feature" and noted that players will "always have the option of choosing to play only with other Xbox Live players." "In addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we're enabling developers to support cross-network play as well," Charla explained. "This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks -- including other consoles and PC networks." The first game to support the functionality is Psyo

5 Smart Tips for Better Microwave Cooking

Image
5 Smart Tips for Better Microwave Cooking There's more to microwaving than piling food on a plate and pushing start. Microwaves are not just for reheating leftovers and boiling water; they can actually be a super-helpful (and healthy) tool for quick and efficient cooking — as long as they're used properly. 1. You don't always have to use the high power setting. High power is not a catch-all setting for microwave cooking. Instead, get familiar with all the power settings on your microwave. Adjusting the power (in particular, lowering it) is the smartest way to get better-tasting food from the microwave. 2. You can use plastic in the microwave (with one caveat). According to the USDA, as long as plastic wrap is labeled microwave-safe, it's OK to use in the microwave. They also recommend leaving plenty of space between the plastic wrap and food so it doesn't actually touch the food during cooking. 3. There's a right way an

Recipe: Cheesy Beefaroni

Image
Recipe: Cheesy Beefaroni Quick Pasta Lunches from Danielle Ceribo I think my first chef crush was on Chef Boyardee. No joke. How could one man get such deliciousness into a tiny, convenient can? And it was tasty every single time I popped that metal lid. Naturally, when I was thinking about meals to make for lunches, I had to do my own Beefaroni. While Chef B’s will always have a special place in my heart, I think this version is a definite improvement on a good thing. The sauce itself is worth having more than just a “taste” every few minutes, so try to restrain yourself — at least until you add the pasta. And that’s before you add any cheese! The sauce is almost like a quick bolognese. I have you add the tomato paste to the meat. This is to make sure the paste gets evenly distributed. Plus, cooking the paste a little bit deepens the flavor. At this point, you may notice that the bottom of your pan has some brown bits. Don’t worry — as long
